In Word 2004 for Mac, I can copy and paste option doesn't work......any advice please?

When you copy, Mac OS X remembers "where the source is" and makes a list of
the output formats that source can provide.

When you Paste, Mac OS X offers the list of available formats to the
destination application and asks it to choose which one it prefers.

Either the source you are copying from does not produce any of the formats
that Word can use, or the destination you are attempting to copy into is
locked against Editing.

To check, use Edit>Paste>Paste Special and have a look to see what is on the
clipboard. If the item on the clipboard is not one of the kinds of file
that Word can open, then it can't paste it either.

Hope this helps

.... Perhaps even a bit more basic than that, John :)

Berbatov -

Before you can Paste anything you have to have something Copied or Cut and
before you can Copy or Cut you must have something Selected. Otherwise the
buttons & Menu commands will not be active.

If John's reply or mine don't help you solve the problem please provide more
details about what you're attempting, how you're going about it, and exactly
what you mean by "doesn't work".

Thanks

BUT......it seems that I can't paste anything I have copied or cut in ANY application e.g Word, PPt or Keynote.

SO, while I can for example cut text in one document, if I try to "paste" in same document or another, then nothing appears in the document and the "paste" option is no longer available in the drop-down menu.

Based on this and your other post it must be something at the system level.
Out of curiosity, once you cut or copy something switch to the Desktop or
Finder & go to Edit> Show Clipboard.

Other than that I'd first suggest that you:

A. Make sure OS X is fully updated,
B. Repair Disk Permissions
C. Restart your Mac

Come back with your results as well as specs on your Mac if those steps
don't get it right.

You have serious System issues open Disk Utilities and repair permissions.
don't even bother to run verify.
Then do it at least two times. Or rerun until it comes back clean. sounds like a
permission to read /write to a disk (hard drive) is set wrong.

If you have recently installed new software can cause this.

IF disk utilities don't get it then you may need to a disk repair Utility such as
Techtool4 Disk warrior.

Caution if your using OSX.5.x then TechTool or DiskWarrior may not be up to date X.5
is a completely new system make sure you get version to run on X.5

Thanks both,

Nothing in clipboard.

tried all other suggestions (disk permissions, keyboard/mouse settings etc) to no avail.....except Diskwarrior which I'll look into tomorrow.

Using MacOSX v 10.5.2. 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Everything is updated as much a possible i think

Hi Berb -

Based on your last post I'd suggest you update OS X first - you specified
10.5.2 but the current level is 10.5.4 - then repair permissions & restart.

I don't *know* that doing so will remedy the matter, but it very well may.
Also, the current level for Office 2004 is 11.5 which is a relatively recent
release. If you haven't yet applied it you should do that too.

If the problem persists we'll narrow things down a bit;

There are several methods for copying: Which have you tried & what are the
results of each (checking the Finder's Edit> Show Clipboard command;

Edit> Copy
Command+C
Control+Click, select Copy
Toolbar button if there is one

Any difference with text v. images?

Have you tried in a different User account?

Proceed carefully: there is something quite major wrong with that system.

As a diagnostic step, have you created a new user and logged in as them? I
think we need to know what happens when you do that.

It sounds very much as thought the "User" (you!) does not have access
permission to critical files such as he system clipboard.

And I have no idea how you would get a system into such a condition :) But
let's see what a new user ID does for us...

Cheers

Hi chaps,

no joy I'm afraid- updated OS as much as poss, checked keyboard shortcuts, clipboard and set up a new user---zip.

This all started when I tried to copy a file onto someone else's USB........during copy, got a message saying device had been removed even though it hadn't. The rest is history.

Disk warrior arrives tomorrow, failing that looking like re-installing OSx?

Well, I wouldn't go that far just yet. Check the Apple Discussions first to
see if there's anything to be offered there. Just make sure to include all
version info as well as a brief but accurate description of the situation &
what you've attempted to resolve it. Start here:

http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1225

I suspect an Archive & Install is the next step unless you've been using
Time Machine - any possibility of that?

Hmmm... If nothing changed in a new user, then yes, you are staring down
the barrel of an archive and install.

As Bob suggested, check the Apple boards first: someone there might have a
better idea.

I'm another person who has had the same problem with Word 2004 and now Word
2008 for Mac. I have the latest OS X 10.5.4 and have repaired my permissions,
etc. Word 2004/8 for Mac has never cut and pasted text using keystrokes while
all my other programs do. It doesn't even cut and paste from one Word doc to
another using keystrokes. If I go to the pulldown window and choose "cut"
and then from the other document choose "paste," It MAY have captured the
text and paste it. But even that is iffy.

That is such an irritation. So what's the problem with Word?

D

Daiya Mitchell

Cut and paste has worked fine for me in Word 2004 and 2008, within Word
and to other problems, no problems (except Word 2008 to Dreamweaver has
different issues). Berbatov, who started this thread, seems to have
bigger issues with his machine that may be affecting cut and paste.

Diagnostic tricks to help locate the cause of the problem:

1) Log out of your user account, then hold down shift while logging back
in. If the problem disappears, it is probably due to some conflict with
the login items/utilities in your user account.

2) create a new user account in OS X and test in that one. If the
problem disappears, then the installation is fine but some user-specific
file has corrupted.

Hi dfree -

What type of Mac do you have? There have been a number of keyboard, firmware
& other downloads released by Apple - not all of which are retrieved by
Software Update. Check the Apple site to make sure you've got what you need;

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

Like Daiya, I've had no problem with copy/paste or other keyboard activity
that hasn't been resolved on my MBP & have never had problems of that nature
on my G5. That includes 2004 & 2008 on both as well as with betas. There
have also been very few reports here of anything similar & [AFAIK] those few
have not been attributable to Office itself.

Typically it's hardware issues (as suggested above), 3rd party "haxies" that
operate in the background, or system keyboard preferences.
