cut command freezes computer

In Excel 97 when I use the cut or the copy command the
spreadsheet and my whole computer freezes. All other
commands and functions work properly. All other office
applications including Word, etc work properly. The Cut
and Copy commands in Word work fine. I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling Office.

This is a classic Excel 97 bug - and Excel 97 is full of them. If you open the file in Excel 2000 this will not happen. What you have here is a workbook that has been invisibly corrupted. You will probably find that some formulae do not recalculate either. I experience this regularly with files that have been modified in Excel 2000 9especially using macros) and then re-opened in Excel 97.
Either re-build the sheet and delete the corrupted sheet, or open it in XP, make changes, close and save - this often cures it.
