Cut or copy commands cause error message "cannot empty the clipboa

EXCEL returns that error message every time I cut or copy something in a cell.

I click "OK" and then proceed to paste or whatever ... which seems to work
correctly. But the error message is a damn nuisance. This behavoir just
started after a year of trouble-free use. Can anyone suggest a fix??

Mac OS 10.2.8 and Excel X for Mac SR 1
