Cut & Paste in Office 2003 returns Bitmap image only - no text

C

Charles

If I make any keystrokes between curring and pasting I only get the option to
paste a bitmap image of the screen. When I activate Office Clipboard I can
see a growing list of bitmaps of screen shots! Something's changed - it never
used to
be like this. Can someone tell me how to fix this? I'm running Office 2003.

Are you sure you are not pasting special as Windows Metafile?

What do you get if you just paste using short cut keyboard keys
(CTRL+V)?

Thanks for replying.
It's a puzzle and happens either using keyboard shortcuts or the edit menu.
Usually if I paste immediately it often works - but say I format some cells
or type some text (not much) before pasting the copied data turns into a
bitmap image of the screen I took the copied data from - a big old image of
the screen shows up when I paste. Under the same conditions - if I use paste
special - I only have the paste as bitmap option none of the usual options.
It's very wierd!

It looks like some files have been deleted. Have you tried Detect &
Repair option of Office? This might just fix it. (From Menubar, Help,
Detect & Repair)

Also, you might want to scan your system for any malwares if they are
interferrig with Office.

Thanks for the advice - I'll do that. Right now in Excel I have 24 bitmap
pictures listed in the office clipboard! All my recent cut/paste items have
changed to bitmaps!! So strange.

Is this in Excel? That's the way it works -- you have to paste immediately
in it.

Other apps don't seem to work this way. See if it also happens in Word or
PPT -- I think it probably will work there as you expect.

Hello & Thanks Echo S
Yes it's mainly in Excel but also in Word. Actually I used detect & repait
and this has improved things somewhat though I am still getting some full
screen shots saved in cut & paste using both keyboard and menu copy & paste -
but at least now it's not all the time!

I'd say you have a third party application intercepting your Copy
command if you are ending up with screen shots in multiple
applications. It sounds like it's using "Print Screen" instead of
Copy. Have you recently installed new software?

If you're getting full screen shots, then I agree with Beth -- sounds like
an add-in or utility intercepting your copying.

How are you cutting/copying/pasting? We saw something similar in the PPT
group not too long ago. Seems the user was able to use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to
copy and paste, but not the copy or paste icons on the toolbar (or
vice-versa, can't remember for sure). I don't know that we ever figured out
what exactly was causing it, because the user was happy with the workaround
of using a different method to copy/paste.

I see you said both keyboard and menu -- but how about toolbar icon?

Hello Echo S/ Beth Melton and ANONYMOUS

Thanks foy your helpful suggestions. I really apperciate your help.

I thought I had cured the problem by using 'detect and repair'.
Today I was typing an email and I highlighted a section to copy and paste to
another part of the letter and got the full screen copy again iinstead of
just pasting my selection.
I was using the keyboard Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V.
Then I the office clipboard and saw a little icon of the full screen shot
that I had previously pasted. I carried on typing and glanced over to the
office clipboard - and lo and behold there were now 5 icons of the same
thing. Woah!
I carried on typing and next time I glanced at the office clipboard it had
filled out to 24 screen shots.
So I deleted one on the 24 icons on the clipboard to see if I could recreate
this - because it seemed to be happening even when I was not copying and
pasting. Guess what - a new screen shot was automatically created when I
pressed the Ctrl-end key or the DEL key - but not the BACKSPACE key!!!!!!!!!
I am 'often' getting the correct text copied an pasted (shows up as text on
the clipboard also) when I use all 3 methods of copying and pasting -
menu/keyboard/icons.
Working on this message (in IE) and having the clipboard open in MS Word
when I highlighted a section of text and deleted it with the DEL key another
icon was created in the clipboard open in MS Word!!!!!!!!!!

I am completely at a loss.

As regards Add-Ins - these are the ones listed in Excel:

Analysis ToolPak
Analysis ToolPak VBA
Conditional Sum Wizard
Euro Currency Tools
Internet Assistant VBA
Lookup Wizard
Pivotpower
Solver Add-in

But the only one that is checked is Pivotpower

So, yes or no: if you click the copy button on the toolbar and then
immediately paste into a cell using the Paste button on the toolbar, does it
paste correctly? You said "often," but I just want to know if the copy/paste
*always* works with the toolbar icons or not.

I suspect a Windows utility or something -- not specifically an Excel
add-in -- is at fault, since, as you said, this behavior also happens in
Word. Or maybe you have a virus. Have you scanned for those lately? Update
your virus scan definitions and scan your entire system.

Do you have any screen capture utilities like SnagIt or HyperSnap? Maybe
your keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys for those is set up to use Ctrl-End or
something. Not positive those would show up in the Office clipboard, but I'm
also not positive they wouldn't.

I think I've narrowed down when it happens.
I can cut/paste in all 3 ways including the copy/paste buttons. But as soon
as I press the DEL key it adds another bitmap of the screen to the clipboard.
When the clipboard fills up with 24 bitmaps it won't accept any more
cut/paste actions and it keeps pasting by default the last item on the
clipboard which is most often the bitmap image! That's why I have found it
not to happen all the time. So when I delete all 24 items in the clipboard -
it all back to normal until the clipboard fills up again!!!!
I'm using Norton 2003 and it's all automatically updated and tun every other
day. But I'm just going to see if there any new downloads and will do a full
virus scan.

Are you sure you are not pasting special as Windows Metafile?

What do you get if you just paste using short cut keyboard keys
(CTRL+V)?

I think Canon Easy Web-print is a means of printing a web page - that's all
I'm aware of. I have never programmed any special keys myself. Any clues
where I might be able to check if I do have any keyboard programs for del and
ctrl-end keys?

I think I've narrowed down when it happens.
I can cut/paste in all 3 ways including the copy/paste buttons. But as
soon
as I press the DEL key it adds another bitmap of the screen to the
clipboard.
When the clipboard fills up with 24 bitmaps it won't accept any more
cut/paste actions and it keeps pasting by default the last item on the
clipboard which is most often the bitmap image! That's why I have found
it
not to happen all the time. So when I delete all 24 items in the
clipboard -
it all back to normal until the clipboard fills up again!!!!
I'm using Norton 2003 and it's all automatically updated and tun every
other
day. But I'm just going to see if there any new downloads and will do a
full
virus scan.

Maybe
your keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys for those is set up to use Ctrl-End or
something. Not positive those would show up in the Office clipboard, but
I'm
also not positive they wouldn't.

Hello Echo S/ Beth Melton and ANONYMOUS

Thanks foy your helpful suggestions. I really apperciate your help.

I thought I had cured the problem by using 'detect and repair'.
Today I was typing an email and I highlighted a section to copy and
paste
to
another part of the letter and got the full screen copy again iinstead
of
just pasting my selection.
I was using the keyboard Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V.
Then I the office clipboard and saw a little icon of the full screen
shot
that I had previously pasted. I carried on typing and glanced over to
the
office clipboard - and lo and behold there were now 5 icons of the same
thing. Woah!
I carried on typing and next time I glanced at the office clipboard it
had
filled out to 24 screen shots.
So I deleted one on the 24 icons on the clipboard to see if I could
recreate
this - because it seemed to be happening even when I was not copying
and
pasting. Guess what - a new screen shot was automatically created when
I
pressed the Ctrl-end key or the DEL key - but not the BACKSPACE
key!!!!!!!!!
I am 'often' getting the correct text copied an pasted (shows up as
text
on
the clipboard also) when I use all 3 methods of copying and pasting -
menu/keyboard/icons.
Working on this message (in IE) and having the clipboard open in MS
Word
when I highlighted a section of text and deleted it with the DEL key
another
icon was created in the clipboard open in MS Word!!!!!!!!!!

I am completely at a loss.

As regards Add-Ins - these are the ones listed in Excel:

Analysis ToolPak
Analysis ToolPak VBA
Conditional Sum Wizard
Euro Currency Tools
Internet Assistant VBA
Lookup Wizard
Pivotpower
Solver Add-in

But the only one that is checked is Pivotpower

:

If you're getting full screen shots, then I agree with Beth -- sounds
like
an add-in or utility intercepting your copying.

How are you cutting/copying/pasting? We saw something similar in the
PPT
group not too long ago. Seems the user was able to use Ctrl+C and
Ctrl+V
to
copy and paste, but not the copy or paste icons on the toolbar (or
vice-versa, can't remember for sure). I don't know that we ever
figured
out
what exactly was causing it, because the user was happy with the
workaround
of using a different method to copy/paste.

I see you said both keyboard and menu -- but how about toolbar icon?

Hello & Thanks Echo S
Yes it's mainly in Excel but also in Word. Actually I used detect &
repait
and this has improved things somewhat though I am still getting some
full
screen shots saved in cut & paste using both keyboard and menu copy

paste -
but at least now it's not all the time!

Other apps don't seem to work this way. See if it also happens in

It's a puzzle and happens either using keyboard shortcuts or the
edit
menu.
Usually if I paste immediately it often works - but say I format
some
cells
or type some text (not much) before pasting the copied data turns
into
a
bitmap image of the screen I took the copied data from - a big
old
image

another part of the letter and got the full screen copy again iinstead
of
just pasting my selection.

&
paste -
but at least now it's not all the time!

:

Is this in Excel? That's the way it works -- you have to paste
immediately
in it.

Other apps don't seem to work this way. See if it also happens in
Word
or
PPT -- I think it probably will work there as you expect.

Thanks for replying.
It's a puzzle and happens either using keyboard shortcuts or the
edit
menu.
Usually if I paste immediately it often works - but say I format
some
cells
or type some text (not much) before pasting the copied data turns
into
a
bitmap image of the screen I took the copied data from - a big
old
image
of
the screen shows up when I paste. Under the same conditions - if
I
use
paste
special - I only have the paste as bitmap option none of the
usual
options.
It's very wierd!

:

Are you sure you are not pasting special as Windows Metafile?

What do you get if you just paste using short cut keyboard keys
(CTRL+V)?

Hi Dan - I've just got this problem - on a HPCompaq I've been using for
years. Have tried different keyboards, and docked/undocked profiles,
plus PCs own keyboard. Am now getting desparate - have rolled back
configuration, but no use. Norton is up to date, no viruses and no
Adware according to Norton and Lavasoft.

When I open the programs the clipboard is already loaded with
screenshots without me doing anything. When I delete all, it reloads
in front of my eyes.

Am using XP2SP2 ans office 2003 - probelm occurs in all programs -
Word, Powerpoint & Outlook.

Did you get a solution?

Thanks

Liza
Hi, I've just started having this exact same problem - I noticed it when
using the arrow keys to navigate around the document. Never had this problem
before on this or any other keyboard - did the new keyboard solve the
problem? What sort of keyboard was it?

Thanks, Dan.

Thanks for the advice - I'll go get a new keyboard

YEP. the keyboard is faulty. Can you try another keyboard on the same
PC to see if it is the keyboard and not anything else.

Regards.

After a little further investigation I discovered that all my keys (Standard
IBM Keyboard) situated between the numbers pad on the right and the main
typing keyboard - from 'print scteen' to 'right arrow' - all behaved in the
same way. depressing any ot those keys copied a dib image onto the clipboard
-all full copies of the screen.

However, when I turned Num Lock off the problem disappeared!!

What is that all about - have I got a dysfunctional keyboard?

So, once again, do you have any screen grab utilities that might be
programmed to take a screenshot when you press Delete?

I think I've narrowed down when it happens.
I can cut/paste in all 3 ways including the copy/paste buttons. But as
soon
as I press the DEL key it adds another bitmap of the screen to the
clipboard.
When the clipboard fills up with 24 bitmaps it won't accept any more
cut/paste actions and it keeps pasting by default the last item on the
clipboard which is most often the bitmap image! That's why I have found
it
not to happen all the time. So when I delete all 24 items in the
clipboard -
it all back to normal until the clipboard fills up again!!!!
I'm using Norton 2003 and it's all automatically updated and tun every
other
day. But I'm just going to see if there any new downloads and will do a
full
virus scan.

:

So, yes or no: if you click the copy button on the toolbar and then
immediately paste into a cell using the Paste button on the toolbar, does
it
paste correctly? You said "often," but I just want to know if the
copy/paste
*always* works with the toolbar icons or not.

I suspect a Windows utility or something -- not specifically an Excel
add-in -- is at fault, since, as you said, this behavior also happens in
Word. Or maybe you have a virus. Have you scanned for those lately?
Update
your virus scan definitions and scan your entire system.

Do you have any screen capture utilities like SnagIt or HyperSnap? Maybe
your keyboard shortcuts/hotkeys for those is set up to use Ctrl-End or
something. Not positive those would show up in the Office clipboard, but
I'm
also not positive they wouldn't.
