damaged document

I'm trying to open a Word document that was created in Word 2007 on someone
else's machine. I am using Word 2007 but the program crashes every time I
open this particular document. Actually it's many docs created by this other
person. One of my coworkers can access all of them just fine in Word 2003.
The message I get is "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience. The information you were
working on might be lost. Microsoft Office Word can try to recover it for
you.†Then there is a box checked that asks them to try and recover the
document. Recovering the document doesn't work either. Does anyone else have
this problem or a solution to it?

I've seen that problem happen with certain table configurations. Do those
documents contain tables?

Are the documents in .doc or .docx format?

Can the original document creator open the files with their copy of Word
2007? If so, and you can't, then the problem might be a corrupted
Normal.dotm, an interfering add-in, or a corrupted registry entry.

What happens if you start Word in safe mode (hold down the ctrl key as Word
is starting, and click Yes to starting in safe mode)? Can you open the
documents now?
