Damaged Office CD

Recently I tried to reinstall Office XP Professional with Frontpage (2002)
from CD. The installation process always stops at REFEDIT.DLL, and the
results of an analysis of disc 1 revealed unreadable files. The CD has been
in a storage case since the last time I used it, so I don't know what's
happened to it.

I have the product key and all I care about is Word and Excel. Would
MSOffice let me download those two programs free? Who would I ask? It doesn't
matter which version. I'm lost without Word.

Microsoft Office XP with Frontpage is a widely pirated version of Office.
Where did you acquire this CD?

Not accusing you of being a pirate but I like to know that I am assisting an
authorized user with solutions.

Hi Milly, thanks for responding.

Pirated version? Ha! Why am I not surprised?

I got it from a savvy, but unscrupulous ex-S.O. with a degree or certificate
in computer technology, who had his own computer repair business for a while.
I knew he was downloading from shady sites, and suspected that he was
cracking passwords and entering sites through the backdoor. When we were
together, he would send me programs that were either better versions of one I
had, or programs that I didn't have at all. He never once talked about what
he was doing or how he did it, but I could tell he was doing sneaky,
hacker-type stuff, or at the very least, questionable stuff, just from
looking at his "Favorites".

He gave me a copy of that Office program on CD. I didn't know it was
pirated...didn't really think about it at all. I believed that because it had
a product key - and the key worked - that it must be legal. I admit that I
knew that obtaining a copy of anything from someone else was wrong, but like
so many people, I can rationalize very well when I need to.

I left him 4 years ago, and this is just one more bit of knowledge affirming
that I made the right desicion.

Hmmm...so where do I go from here?

You purchase a legitimate current version of Office.

Hi DL,

I've seen OpenOffice on google, but it sounded too good to be true, and you
know what they say about that... ;)

After reading your post, I went to the site and checked it out. I'm sold!
Hope it's as good as it sounds.

Thanks for taking the time.
