'Dangerously Low in resources' how do I rectify problem in Word?

When trying to open a word document, the system freezes, I then press
ctrl/alt/delete & message comes up Dangerously low in resources. What does
this mean & does anybody know how I can rectify this (bearing in mind that I
can't actually get into the program!) The other programs(excell etc.) are
fine so it can't be the hard drive's memory that is full.
