Dashes in Social Security numbers

Using Excel XP, I cannot get the dashes in phone numbers nor Social Security
numbers to stay when I merge documents. I have formatted them as text,
formatted them special, and still they show up with no dashes once merged. I
never had this problem with Office 2000. HELP!
