Dashes

When I click a bunch of dashes, like this:

----------------------

Then I hit return, Word converts it into a solid line across the page.

I like this feature sometimes. How can I get it ala carte when I want it.
thanks

It's only available as an AutoFormat as you type option, so it's not
available "a la carte". See "AutoFormat As You Type options" in Word
Help.

Although you should be able to make an AutoCorrect entry that will do this
on demand. Look up "Create an AutoCorrect entry" in the Word Help.

To do so:

Format a blank paragraph with a top border. Select the paragraph mark
and choose Tools/Autocorrect. Type --- in the replace textbox, ensure
Formatted Text is selected, then click Add.

I found the auto format as you type area and did not see anything about
this. I did see "symbol character -- with symbol -)

Whatever that means, I have no idea, I unchecked it and it did not disable
what I am still getting which is when I type dashes and then enter a line
straight across the page.

I would like to type dashes when I want, and would like a way to get a
straight line across page when I want. I want a lot of things huh.

The AutoFormat As You Type option about borders is what controls the
straight lines, under "apply as you type".

You can also get a straight line when you want by applying a border to the
paragraph via Format | Borders and Shading.

Thanks Dayo:
That worked, turning off the borders checkbox. Now if I want a straight
line across the page, and I have the formatting palette open to borders and
shading, what do I do?? Thanks!!!
