Data access for input into document

Hi

I have some word document templates sitting in SharePoint. The documents
have metadata associated with them at the document library level (child) and
since there is a load of common data aswell I have created a custom list
(parent) that the documents also need to access to to avoid the user
reentering data for each document.

Is it possible to (how do I) access data from a sharepoint list and tie it
to a document - Hope this makes sense
