data connection Wizard problems with some ODBC connections

Lorraine Ford

We have recently encountered this problem after upgrading to Word 2003.
When we try to create a mail merge document, and bring up the window where you
can see the list of your ODBC datasources, we can no longer access some of the
datasources. Let me clarify, The ODBC 'administrator' screen does bring up the
connection screen, and I can click "test connection' and the connection to the
database is successful, but when I click OK to return to MS Word, this error
appears on the screen in a message box with the title" Microsoft Office Word":
"The Data Connection Wizard cannot obtain a list of databases from the specified
data source."

The ODBC datasources that fail are both Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere version
5.5 and version 9 connections.

If we select the Microsoft Access sample databasenorthwind.mdb, the connection
and table list comes up fine.

These connections worked with no problem in the previous version of MS Word.

This test has been repeated on more than one machine, but both were using
Windows XP service pack 1.

Thanks.
Lorraine

Make sure that in Word under Tools, Option, General tab that the option
'Update Links on Opening' is checked.

Terry,
We checked this setting, and it was set by default so that did not solve the
problem.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks,
