data entered in word jumps to new location following cursor

Text entered in MS Word will begin entry in new location in the Word document
depending where the cursor is resting. One can key in the first couple of
letters of a word in a sentence and have the remainder of the word keyed
another place in the document depending where the cursor is resting. How does
one turn off this option. It doesn't appear to be an option in the mouse
setup. This is maddening.

Is this a laptop with a touchpad pointing device? This is usually a symptom
of a grossly over-sensitive touchpad that is reacting to a falling atom. If
you go to the touchpad setup (usually integrated with the Control Panel
Mouse settings), you can desensitise or even disable the touch sensitivity.

You can test this is the problem quickly by turning off the touchpad
(typically that is Function+F7) and testing without it active.
