All mail, contacts, etc are stored in a file with a PST
extension. You can backup that file to backup everything.
Since the whole PST file will most likely be faily large,
you could also export the contacts to it's own PST for
backup purposes. Select your contacts folder, the file -
Import/Export and follow the prompts.
