Data Integrity errors?

RE "Word 2002"...(Using XP Pro)
When I amend a saved Document and try to save it, I get a menu "Internal
Data Integrity (Type 4)1 Error. Repairs are made and I now have two files
in "My Documents" one of which is unreadable. I have run "Detect and Repair"
without success. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks!

What does the document contain? Images? Tables?

Did you try using the "Open and Repair" command found in the Open
dialog under the Open drop down?

Beth,
The documents I am creating are purely text. Yes, I have tried to use "Open
and Repair", but without success. I notice that the duplicate file
("repaired file) that the system continuously creates is a ..WRLxxxx.tmp
type.
I ultimately delete the .tmp file as the primary xxxx.doc file is always okay.
Any other suggestions to help me understand/fix this nuisance will be
appreciated.

Strange. Typically this error can be attributed to documents
containing older clipart or numbering.

Does it occur on the same document or various documents? If the same
document try creating a new file, modify the document such as press
your spacebar and then backspace, and then go to Insert/File and
insert the contents of the document encountereing the error into the
new document.

If it is various documents then were the documents you are opening
creating in a previous version of Word?

Although Word 97 - Word 2003 share the same file format, Word 2003
uses a different method for opening a file. This has caused a few
minor issues, such as the one you have encountered. However, as you
found, the Open and Repair function corrects the issue.

The message "Internal data integrity" means the problem lies in the
internal binary portion of the document. So once the repair has been
made the document will not visually change.

On one hand, the fact the documents are getting repaired is a good
thing. Although it may be annoying, the alternative is corrupt
documents that can not be opened.

Beth,
Thanks again for the reply.
The problem occurs on every new document I create. I have no problems with
older documents....once the repair has been made. It looks like I may have
to live with this nusiance?

If it's a problem with new docs only, then perhaps Normal.dot is corrupt?
Try renaming it, with Word closed. Then restart Word and try again.

Suzanne,

You're a genius? I was not familiar with "Normal.dot", but when I renamed
it "Wordfix.dot" it now works. I've been putting up with this problem for
quite some time.

Thanks so much!!!

Your problem helped me too. I had the same problem and it was very
frustrating..deleting the normal.dot template seems to have solved it. Many
thanks!

Just a caution: We don't normally advise *deleting* Normal.dot because it is
the default repository of most of your customizations (AutoText entries,
macros, modified styles, custom toolbars, customized toolbars and menus,
formatted AutoCorrect entries, etc.). Many of these can be retrieved from a
*renamed* Normal.dot (via the Organizer) if renaming and letting Word
generate a fresh copy solves the problem. If it doesn't, then the renamed
file can be changed back to Normal.dot and other avenues explored.
