Data Interchange Excel and MSWorks 4.5a

Rodney

Using currently Excel 97
when copying data betwixt the 2, I have to "Paste Special"
into a Word Proc then copy and re paste the Data to Works.

I have been advised that Excel Version 5 exports data OK
Anyone have experience here?
Is Version 5 still available anywhere?

Thanks

You might check ebay...........I've seen older versions of Office/Excel
there fairly reasonable.

Can you not just save the Excel file down as a *.csv file and then open in
Works? One sheet at a time, but easier than what you have outlined I would
think.

A general note I often quote that may also help:-

Generally you would normally open the file in WORKS and then save it down as a
file that Excel can read. .xlr is a native Excel format, or .txt, .csv, dbaseIV
are all formats it can read. You can also find a converter here if you don't
have WORKS.

Text from the website above:-

Microsoft does not provide an import Excel filter for Works-WKS files later than
version 2. (for Works-WPD and Word they do). There is no standard way to convert
a lot of Works-WKS files into the Excel format. You need to save each file out
of Works manually into XLS which is a pain in the neck. Here comes our MS Works
Spreadsheets to Excel Converter. It does not need a Works Installation and you
can use the batch converting wizard (see right side).
a.. Completely integrated into Excel 97/2000/XP, no external program
b.. Imports MS Works Spreadsheet (*.WKS) 3.x ,4.x, 200x files
c.. Convenient, selfextracting and selfinstalling setup procedure
d.. Can be removed completely with standard deinstall procedure
e.. Works with Windows 9x, ME, NT 4, 2000, XP
f.. Our RL-File-Conversion-Wizard is part of the package
g.. Converts cell alignments, font styles, etc.
h.. Excel helper macros to make migration easier
i.. No need for a Works installation
j.. Free Updates: Our registered customers can download the latest version
from our download area at any time

Two articles from Microsoft that deal with Works and the files it can open/save
as.

Thanks Chuck, and thanks Ken for your detailed response.
I'll follow that up.
The particular use we have for data interchange is not solved by
completely saving either Works or Excel sheets in their entirety in suitable formats.

We employ Works simply for it's blinding speed, and ability
to mix, match and run free form quickly and accurately.

Using Excel is bloated and yawn food for our use, but we need it for the muscle
it offers in the VLookup area, and hence only require "Fields" or
"Columns" of data to be swapped.

Thanks for the options you have pointed out, hope we can arrive at
a better marriage of the two.

G'day Rodney.

If you are using Works 4.5 you can save your worksheet in Excel format and
then open it using Excel 97.

You'll see the File Type "Excel ss" listed and you should be aware that it
is a generic Excel 5

When you save it in Excel 97 you should do a "save as Excel 5" and Works 4.5
should be able to do an import of that type.

G'day Richard,
Thanks for that.
I realise "you don't always get what you want"
but I was looking for limited data set transfers
eg: cut and paste.
Transferring files is overkill for my circumstance.

I shall try to locate a copy on the web, or pickup
a used copy of Excel 5 from "Boot sales" and give
it a whizz.
I use the cut and paste from Excel daily, so the effort
to locate a copy is warranted.

Regards
