data labels - percentage format reverts to decimal

Dave R.

I've checked several times, and I am having this problem.

I have a workbook with 12 sheets, each with it's own chart (the charts link
only to the sheet they are on, if that matters).

Even after formatting data labels as percentages, sometimes they revert to
decimals. I used XY chart labeler to put them on, and they are linked to
cells. The cells are formatted as percentage also.

I've gone through and seen it doing this a few days ago, and changed them
all to percentage again. Now, many of them are decimals.

Any idea why this would be happening?

I think a solution would be to change the linked cells to text of '29%
instead of .29 as they are now, to 'force' the data label to display text,
but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Thanks

Actually, I cannot just convert the linked cells to text because the values
for the chart are being pulled from there....

Actually, they were not "linked" when I clicked on them and went to
"number" -- but they were linked enough to change when the numbers in the
range changed.

Anyways I hope that by "linking" them through Excel's built in method will
keep it from reverting to decimals.

Are the values in a different workbook? Number formats in charts by default are linked to the
number formats in the source data areas. If the data comes from another workbook, and the source
workbook is not open, Excel defaults to the General number format. After creating the labels,
you need to go into the number format dialog, and uncheck the Linked to Source box. This locks
in the current number format, but keeps the label values dynamic.
