OK - as a quick test I just dummied up an Excel list of more than 11,000
records & did a merge to labels in Word specifying Custom: 1 - 10000 & had
no problem merging the 10000 records into a new 334 page document. Just to
be safe I ran it again indicating 1 - 10500 resulting in a new 350 page
document. Also, when I "go back to look at the number" - I assume you mean
in the DMM palette - it is displayed as 10... [based on the latter merge]
& if I click in the field it displays 1050, indicating that the 10500 has
been retained. This leads me to believe that there is more at issue here
than a limit to Word's capability.
In order to determine what, you'll need to supply a bit more information:
What versions of Word, OS X?
What type of document - Labels, envelopes, form letter?
Source of & other details about the Excel data document.
Total number of records.
What do you mean by "one page"?
Any additional details you can supply.

I've honestly not done a merge that large, but AFAIK you aren't limited
on a
Mac either - it's just that the field in the Complete Merge section of
the
DMM palette is only wide enough the *display* 4 digits. Have you tried
typing a larger value into the field? I have no problem here with the
field
accepting 1,000,000,000,000,000 - I haven't got a source that large, so
how
it would work in the real world I can't say
Keep in mind, of course, that unless your intent is to restrict the
number
of records to be included in the merge you don't have to specify any
number
at all - just leave the top list set for All.

It will take any number, but will only merge 1 page and then when you
go back to look at the number that is in the fields it would be 1000
instead of 10000. I was doing just what you said and that was breaking
this down so we didn't have such a huge file.
