data on ftp

i am trying to link my database to an xls file on an ftp
address. the massage i get is:
"the wizard is unable to access information in the
file 'ftp://homepages.ihug.co.nz/data/contacts.xls'.
please check that the file exists and is in the correct
format."
i have copied the file to my local drive and it worked.
why can't i link from the ftp address?

YOu don't have the necessary permissions and/or appropriate remote
capabilities to access the file via ftp.

Access doesn't recognize either the ftp or http protocols for linking
tables.
