in Access 2000. Would like to creat a Journal database,
such that the text in the details field could not be
edited once the form is saved.

Okay, I got it now, my two cents worth. If it were me I
would lock the field (on the form) once the user goes to a
new record updating another hidden field so that even if
they go back to that record that field remains locked, ie

Hidden field: Archive yes/no
Text field

if archive =yes blah, blah, blah
else
blah, blah...
