Data Validation against secondary data connection

Hello,

I am trying to make a field validate the data against a secondary data
source. The user types in the serial number of a product and i want it to
check this other database to make sure that serial number exist. I have it
setup to autofill other fields based of the the serial number that is typed
in and it works but fails data validation. I have set the data validation
like field1 is not equal to ser_num than show error message. But when they
are equal to each other it still shows the error message. Can anyone please
let me know what i am doing wrong.
