Database Daemon (Not Responding) creating lag time

S

Shawn Bettes

I have Entourage 11.2.3 (060209) and often Entourage will lag. I have a 12¹
Powerbook G4 867Mhz with 640 MB of RAM and 8 GB of HD space. (4 Gb needed
for VRAM) I use Entourage for connecting to both my office¹s exchange
server (email and calendar) and my personal POP email server.

The issue: I am finding that Entourage lags and I get the spinning rainbow
wheel often when Entourage is on. Both on site at work and home. I have
found that when this happens if I open Activity Monitor I see that Database
Daemon is (NOT RESPONDING).

The Question: Is there a reason for this? Is there a solution to this
problem.

Thanks

It's possible you have some database corruption. You might try rebuilding
the database.

I have exactly the same hardware set up and Entourage version. I only get
POP email. I have the same Database Daemon not responding issue. It seems to
happen right after I download my email, although it may happen at other
times. It does not always happen after download. I have rebuilt the database
without a change. I reinstalled entourage at the suggestion of a Mac Genius.
There does not seem to be a change.

The best thing to overcome it seems to be to force quit Entourage and then
force quit Database Daemon from Activity Monitor.

Any other suggestions?

Me, too, and it is becoming unbearable. It happens one to two times a
day and locks up my email as I am typing a new email, usually, for
about 3 to 4 minutes. Force quitting sounds too risky, for fear of
corrupting the database. I set Norton to avoid scanning the database,
so it's not that. What's going on Mactopia? With Entourage and
Database Daemon locking up and causing the hard disk to churn, you must
know what is going on. Three minutes of waiting is a lifetime on a
computer.

I force quit Entourage and Database Daemon regularly because they lock up.
So far no other problems [as far as I can tell].

However, other symptoms I have include that it takes 8 seconds for Barry
Wainright's applescript to insert text from a note into an email instead of
nearly immediate. It takes 45 seconds for quicksilver to open a contact.
Quicksilver also does not maintain the scan of Entourage contacts after a
quit.

Try rebuilding the database - this may be a symptom of corruption

I did just now.

It did not fix any of the symptoms. [I have not had it lock up on me yet but
I do not really know what causes it.]

I had an old identity that I used and when I changed to it, your notes apple
script inserted the text immediately as you said it did for you.

I assume that means that I need to create a new identity. I think I know how
to move mail to the new one. Does that mean I need to buy Paul Berkowitz'
export-import script?

thanks

Hi Barry,

I do this about every month after deleting thousands of spam emails, as
general maintenance. I did this per your recommendation and it seemed
to bring a couple days of partial relief. I think I noticed shorter
stalls, a few seconds, which are now back to a 3 to 4 minute stalls
with Database Daemon locking up as usual.

After rebuilding, though, strangely, Entourage said all was fine and
rebuild was complete, but a warning of a corrupt Office database came
up not long after restarting Entourage. Running the Entourage
inspection from the same area as the rebuild feature confirmed a clean
database. Are there other elements in Office, aside from Entourage,
that might get tweaked and cause Database Daemon problems with
Entourage.

Thanks,
Steve
