Database engine failure

I have used mail merges a lot but lately when I go to try
to create a new mailing list I get the following message:

"This operation cannot be completed because of dialogue or
database engine failure"

Any suggestions?

1) Version of Word?
2) Version of Windows?
3) What's the data source?
