Database rebuild and newsgroup settings.

Dear members:

I just had to rebuilt my database a few days ago after Entourage first
detected problems with the database and then started to refuse to open it.
The rebuild process caused some unwanted losses such as e-mails that
disappeared and newsgroups that were reset to zero.

One of the things I found the most annoying with database rebuilds is the
fact that whatever newsgroups information I have set up it is always lost. I
have tried copying and pasting the Newsgroups Cache file from the old
database (prior to rebuild) to the new database (after the rebuild) but it
didn't seem to work.

Newsgroups are a really big deal for me. I have spent hundreds of hours
reading messages in the many newsgroups I subscribe to and some of these can
have as many as 90000 to 100000 messages in their archive when you first
subscribe. Now that my settings have been reset by the rebuild process I
have all my newsgroups displays all messages once again as non-read.

Is there a way to rescue the settings I had before the rebuild so that my
newsgroups can go back to precisely what it was before ?

Thank you in advance,

Joseph Chamberlain

Hi Joseph!

I haven't found a way of preserving this information between rebuilds.
It's indeed annoying. Be sure to let Microsoft know you'd like to see
the newsgroup cache be protected during a database rebuild by selecting
Send Feedback from the Help menu in any Office application.

One thing that I've found helpful after a rebuild is to set the default
threshold for downloading messages from 300 to 9999 and download as much
as possible until nothing is left to download. Then sort all messages by
date, select all the messages from prior days and mark them as read. I
then set my view to show me unread messages only.

Hope this helps!

Then sort all messages by

You can set up a custom view to display all news messages older than (for
example) 30 days, then 'select all' and mark as read. This will quickly
eliminate most of the unread messages.

Note that all the messages that you had in entourage are still on the server
(they get deleted from entourage when they are aged off the server). There
is a 'get more' command available to download more messages, or simply set
the download messages count (in the account settings) to some ridiculously
high number as Bill suggests.
