Database Utility fails to rebuild

When I try to open Entourage, I'm told my database needs to be rebuilt. I checked the disk with the Apple disk utility and it's OK. When I try to run the Microsoft database utility, it tells me there are Office applications running and that I should close them. Nothing else is running. Notifications are off. Restarting does not change this behavior.

What should I try next?

Thx

Most likely it's the hidden application the Microsoft Database daemon.
Simply lot out then log in with Shift key down to disable all startup items
including the hidden ones.

Before you try to rebuild....

1) Make a duplicate in the Finder first as additional backup. A rebuild does
make a duplicate, but sometimes in the process the original and backup get
merged resulting in total disaster. It's rare but it happens.

2) Check to see how much free space you have. You need a minimum of 10% free
just for virtual memory then you will need a lot more for the rebuild
process. See this article for more info: <http://tinyurl.com/4s6qv3>

How to rebuild:

Once you have your database rebuilt, I suggest making a copy. Often the
rebuild will do nothing other than allow you to open the Identity and
salvage the data. Having a copy will keep you from having to go through the
rebuild process a second time if the newly rebuilt Identity crashes and goes
belly up.

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

Thanks! I'm up and running again, with my fingers crossed and multiple backups. Creating more disk space seemed to make a difference.

Glad to hear it worked for you. A lot of extra space can make all the
difference.
