Databasing and tagging slides

I work with a large pharmaceutical company. In this heavily regulated
environment, I am asked to keep track of a database of over 1200 slides. When
one change is made to a slide by a legal or regulatory team, I am asked to
make the change, "tag" the slide with new job numbers, date of approval, and
change that was made, and update whatever presentations this slide is in.
Right now I do all of this manually - I write the information on the slide at
the top of the notes page in a text box and then search all of the
presentations I know of. There has to be a better way to do this! I have some
questions:

1.) Is there a way to database individual slides and draw from them to make
various presentations?
2.) Is there a way to "tag" slides as I have described above? It seems I am
asked to record more and more information for each individual slide that
needs to go with it.

If I have to buy 3rd party software, I guess I will, but my client is not
going to pay for this. Does anyone know if the next version of Powerpoint
will have this so I can just wait?

Thanks,
