I've been having this problem for a couple of months but I have usually been able to get around it by persistence but not any longer. In the past I get the message and just restart the program and it opens. That doesn't work now.

When I try to open my database I get the message "Entourage cannot access your data. To attempt to fix the problem, rebuild your database". I've tried that. I've tried to delete preference files, copying the database to a new identity, compacting the database.... Nothing works. The database utility says there is nothing wrong with the database each time.

You can't do this!
compacting the database.... Nothing works. The database utility says there is

Is the problem just the error message or are you actually seeing problems in
Entourage?

See these options:

I highly suggest that while you can open Entourage that you make a backup
copy. I would do this daily until you solve your problem. Also set to leave
mail on server so you could reclaim that mail if Entourage totally fails.

When you are having problems and a database rebuild does not fix the
problems, you can manually move your data into a new Identity.

Can you confirm any problem with Entourage from Office Mac OSX and Leopard. I cannot rebuild my database since using Lepoard and this is a worry !

Thank you

David

Okay, last night I tried and tried to get to my email but to no avail. I have tried these things that you have suggested before but they did not work.

There was one thing different that I did last night and that was to use the Import-Export Entourage script. It got me slightly closer to my email but not totally there. The first time I tried it I was asked about my keychain because I had done an update to try to fix this. It went on to open the Mail window but I couldn't access my mail and every time I tried I got a 16008 error code. This continued every time I clicked on a folder or any other thing in the window. I was also asked to provide my password, I assume that is due to the trashing of the preferences.

I have been very careful to keep an intact identity folder and all of the experiments I have done were on copies of my database.

So many people do not and in the testing process damage their database so
that nothing can be salvaged.

Let's look at YOUR situation. You have Office 2004 and Leopard. Office 2004
has been a stable product. Your database could be corrupted, or something in
your User's folder could be affecting performance. Leopard is new and based
on how you updated/installed it can be problematic.

Let's verify that your OS install and User's folder are not part of the
problems.

1. Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to
the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Entourage
there by adding an account an testing to see if you can Send & Receive. (Set
Account to "leave mail on server" under the Options tab.)

2. Does it work? If yes, then we look at your User's folder and/or Identity.

3. If it does not work, then we look at your Leopard install.

See Step 7:

Let me know how this goes.

You need to ask your question in your own thread. Please respond in a new
subject with the following info:

What version Mac OS X are you running? Leopard 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2???

What version Microsoft Entourage are you using? Including update if any. How
to find version info:

I fixed the problem! I'm not sure exactly what it was that I fixed but, essentially, I used the remove office program and then reinstalled Office 2004 and installed all of the updates.
