Datasheet view error in PS2003

I am trying to edit some columns in the datasheet view on a project's
sharepoint site and receive the following error:

The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the
following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows SharePoint
Services is not installed, your browser does not support ActiveX controls, or
support for ActiveX controls is disabled.

I have verified the Active X controls are set properly. I found a reference
on the web that indicated if we aren't on Office 2003, we will receive this
error. The suggestion was to install Windows Sharepoint Services Support.
Is this the proper "fix" for this issue? Also, we are planning on migrating
to PS2007; since we are currently only on Office XP (2002), will we be
required to upgrade Office to a more current version?

Thank you!

It sounds like you're using Office 2000. Some of these functions, like the
Explorer view, require a later version of the Office Web components. You
should be able to use this functionality on systems where you have Project
2003 installed.

Hi Gary-

So, are you saying that even though I am running Office XP on my PC, the
fact that I am also running Project Pro 2003 should allow me to see the
datasheet view? From the article I read, I assumed that being on Project
2003 wouldn't be enough... that we would also need to be running Office 2003.
Needless to say, I still can't see this view.

As it turns out, there are some other people in my organization that are
running into simliar problems with some web-based apps due to being on
different versions of Office. It sounds like we will need to upgrade some
people to Office 2003 or higher to meet their specific needs. But we are not
planning on upgrading the entire organization at this time (due to licensing
expenses). Since we are planning on migrating to PS2007, will all PWA users
also need to be on Office 2007 for certain functionalities to work? Is there
a way to find out which functionalities require Office 2007 (versus Office
XP) in PS2007? The answer could influence the timing of our migration....

thank you!!

You need to seek a better informed source than me, to make sure you answer
these questions correctly if you're making vital technology decisions based
on the answers. To my understanding, the feature loss between 2007 and XP is
minimal and shouldn't keep you out of the game. Your problem with the view
could be active X permissions as this functionality requires and Active X
control. You problem might be permissions.

Gary-

I'm sorry... I didn't intend for my question to sound as dire as it did.
I've seen a lot of conflicting opinions "out there" and I have come to value
yours based on your numerous posts. We have been trying (unsuccessfully) to
find a company to use for support and questions such as these. If you have
any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. But it sounds like I need to
do some more research.

Thank you for your help, though!

Our company provides these services. My point is that when it comes to
upgrading or migrating to the next version, that decision needs to be made
in light of an understanding of your organizational needs. Be very wary of
people who are willing to make blanket declarations in absence of important
information.

This is a lesson that has been learned the hard way :)

I had initially hoped to find out from other users if there are known
"gotchas" with running PS2007 in an older Office environment, to avoid
running into a system compatibility issue. But I agree that it is probably
better to approach this more formally.

I looked at your company's website (and finally put a face to your "voice")
and will definitely be contacting you to discuss your support services.

Thanks again, Gary!
