Date and time in chart

Mac os x 10.2.8
Excel x for mac, service release 1

I'm trying to get chart with x-axis in format 3/14/01 13:30
Data is formatted that way but the chart does not want to conform - if I
change the axis data after creating chart to above format it clumps all the
data at midnight on each date and ignores the individual time data.

Please help.

What type of chart are you using.

My testing with an X-Y scatter chart doesn't reproduce this.

A line chart will show this behavior, since line charts will use the
date/time as a category, rather than a value, and will clump all the
data in equally spaced increments. Note that while line charts allow a
"Timescale" X-axis, the output is really a "Datescale" X-axis.
