Date automatically updated in a saved file

I have never seen this before or just never noticed it happening. When I
retrieve a saved file in Word, the date on the document is automatically
being updated to today's date. Not good when I'm trying to go back to
document correspondence I've previously sent. How do I stop the date from
changing? I want the saved document to be exactly as it was written on the
original date.

Press Alt+F9 to display the field code. Change DATE or TIME to CREATEDATE.
If your documents are based on a specific template containing a DATE field,
change it to CREATEDATE.

You are using a DATE or TIME field rather than a CREATEDATE field. This
field should be put in the original template if possible (instead of
inserting using the keyboard shortcut or header/footer toolbar button).

In the document in question, press Alt-F9 to display field codes. Then
change the field to a CREATEDATE field, press F9 and then Alt-F9.

See http://addbalance.com/word/datefields1.htm for information on the
different kinds of datefields and how to format them.

Thank you Suzanne. Is there any way to retrieve the original date on an
already saved document or is this gone forever?

If you change it to a CreateDate field and update it, this may work.

When you change the DATE field to CREATEDATE and update it (F9), it will
reflect the original creation date.
