date changed when sheet changes

Can I place a date in a field that automatically changes
to the current date when an individual makes a change on
the sheet.

If I need to make it a chang in a certain range no problem.

IF I open the sheet and make no chamges or I have read
only status then I need date to stay

this is a fiel on shared drive.
