Date Changes to 01/00/00 when i enter any date.

Using XL2003, I have a problem. When i enter a date in cell, such as
08/25/10, or use the shortcut Ctrl ;, XL displays 01/00/00 in the
cell instead. I have formatted the cell as a date. What can I do to
fix this problem?
