Date Changes

HELP!!!

In using MS Word for Mac [part of Microsoft Office 2004] with a
document that bears a date, such as a letter, when opening that
document at a subsequent date, the date on the previously created
document changes automatically to the current date.

This is driving me nuts since I'm not able to print the previously
created document at a later date with the document bearing the
originally created date.

WHAT HAVE I DONE to cause this to happen?

WHAT DO I DO to stop it from happening?

Thanks

The two most likely causes are:

1- The doc is based on a template that uses the wrong type of field for the
date, or

2- You're using the Insert>Date & Time command with a check in the box to
"Update Automatically"

Either way you're winding up with a DATE field, so in existing docs you need
to unlink it to prevent it from updating. Do either of the following in the
problem docs:

1- Select & Cut the date, then go immediately to Edit>Paste Special -
Unformatted Text, or

2- Select the date & key Shift+Command+F9 (I believe that's right) to unlink
the field.

If the docs are based on a template you'll need to edit the template to
replace the DATE field with a CREATEDATE field so that future docs don't
present the same problem. OTOH, if you've been inserting dates using the
menu command, from now on just remove the check mentioned above so that the
current date is inserted rather than a field.
