Date Display in Calendar

WinXP/Outlook 2003
The top of the Main window (the banner ?) to the right of the title
"Calendar" shows the date and then again the same date, or range of dates,
in brackets.
Why the duplicate and how could that be changed? Regardless of the format in
Regional settings, I always get the duplicate in brackets.
