date format in Excel 2001

I have Office 2001 installed on a 14" iBook running
OS9.2.2. I am having a problem with the date format in
Excel: my "date and time" control panel is set to use dates
in the d/m/yy format, but Excel only recognises dates
entered as m/d/yy. How can this be fixed?
