Date Format not coming over from Excel

I have a Word document I am merging with my Excel data and everything goes
smoothly except for two items: date format and number format. I found an
explanation on how to fix the number format on this board, but have not been
able to find a fix for the date format.
Can someone help please?

Hi,

Date formats can be specified using a formatting switch in
much the same way as numeric switches. For example:
{DATE \@ "dddd, MMMM d, yyyy"}
would give a result like Sunday, November 2, 2003
