Date format not the same as settings

Hi there,
I am trying to get excel 2004 to recognise my dates in the dd/mm/yyyy
format. i have changed the settings in the preferences on the system to
reflect this yet excel still instits on formating dates mm/dd/yyy. can
any one tell me how to fix this?

Select the cells in question, then go to Format > Cells. There you can
specify (in Number) the format as being Date and you get a choice of
formats. If your choice is not there, go to Custom and make it up.
