date formated as date showing as number

I have a sheet that has the column formated as a date. When a date is
entered, It shows in the toolbar area as a date but it shows on the cell as a
number.

you are viewing formula mode.

go to tools | options | view tab | uncheck formulas | ok

Ctrl + ~
