How do you make the date format 1/1/2004 appear as the day of the week Saturday?

I don't know, if you want the weekday you format custom as dddd
however it's a Thursday

You can make it appear as a Thursday --

Select the cell that contains the date
Choose Format>Cells
On the Number tab, select the Custom category
In the text box, type: dddd
Click OK
