Date Formats

I have a spreadsheet with the date formats set. Whenever I enter new dates the values display as $38,000 or similar. Is this a bug or how do I stop it?

What do you mean ³dates format set²? What is the format of the cell you are
trying to enter data into? Look in Format-Cells-Number tab. What is the
format? What EXACTLY are you typing in the cell? What EXACTLY shows up in
the cell when you press RETURN?

It appears your cells are formatted as currency rather than a date
format. Does "Date" appear in the Format: dropdown in the Number pane of
the Formatting Palette?

Note that XL stores dates as integer offsets from a base date, so today,
25 January 2008, is 38,010 days since 1/1/1904.

What happens if you choose Format/Cells..., and choose a date format
from the Date category in the Number pane?

The cells are all formatted correctly in the Format / Number pane. They are set to 01-MAR-08 which should display the leading zero on dates

During the session the format applies correctly. If you save the spreadsheet
and re-open, dates entered display as $ values such as $38,010.

I've also a second question open concerning a similar probelm with currencies.
If you format an entire column to £, save and close, all the values entered
display in $ when the sheet is re-loaded.
Excel picks up the system setting for date formats and currencies when EXCL
opens, not when the file opens. So, if you change the system settings you
MUST close and restart Excel for the settings to take effect.

If this is not the issue you are seeing, but are seeing formats of cells
change from the time a fie is closed to when it is reopened, I¹d like to see
an example.

Checked the system settings on the MAC. They are set to "British Pounds Sterling" and so this is not the cause of the problem. How do I send you a sample spreadsheet

whomever you send to do the following:

If you have StuffitX Deluxe use .zip to make archive.
If not then, from File Menu fro desktop after highlighting the desired
file. Choose Make Archive of file .... (being name of file).

Then send this to desired party at their correct email address. some
have email address with each answer. often munged to prevent spamming
you have to demunge the email address first before sending
