Date Formats

Is there any way to change the default date format from MM/DD/YY to DD/MM/YY? It is important that I change it as New Zealanders don't use the MM/DD/YY format.

I have searched all the help files and can't seem to find anything

XL gets its date formats from MacOS. Make sure the date formats in
System Preferences/International are set to dd/mm/yy.

Thanks, it turns out that I had put in some custom Date settings so XL was not interpreting the dates correctly. Selecting just the New Zealand Format corrected the issue.

My System Preferences/International is correctly set for Norway (no adjustments), but Excel DOES NOT get this date format, and forces me to enter dates in other formats (e.g. dd-mm-yy) which are uncommon in Norway. I have read about this problem in other discussion groups, but have found no solution.

Try the following:

open a dummy document.

with out inserting anything go to format cells and choose dates the
choose your desired format which I believe is 1/3/01 (1 being the day/3
the month/01 the year).

Then once set save as a document. if you have set in Preferences a
message should show up save in Normal? if it does choose yes or okay
whatever is equivalent in your language of choice. You wan to save the
changes.

Now quit

Now throw away the dummy document. its served it purpose.

Now Open and when you type a date in see if it comes out like you want.

IF not you may have to use a different method which other people might
suggest.

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

Philip,
Thank you for taking the time to answer and for your suggestion! Maybe this would have also solved my problem, but before your answer it solved itself! I "messed around" with the International setting (which were set to standard Norwegian in the first place). Then, suddenly Excel accepted input in the way I wanted (dd.mm.yy).

The correct date format does still not show in the Date-list in Format, but now my Norwegian format under Custom is the default.

Thanks anyway!

Glad it worked. Excel takes its setting form the system preferences when it
starts up. Did you quit and restart Excel after changing the system
settings?

Yes, I did. The funny thing is that Excel did not get the settings from the system prefs before I had made changes to them, as if the program was not able to get the original settings before some "hangup" had been removed...?
