Date-Formatted Cells Not Appearing as Dates

I inherited an extensive in-house Excel spreadsheet and have come across the
strangest issue I've ever seen! I have a column dedicated to "Date Sent" and
all cells are formatted to mm/dd/yy. However, when I type in the date, a
totally unrelated number appears (e.g., 4/4/2006 appears as 38811)!! I've
unlocked all cells, but that hasn't helped. When I select Text as opposed to
Date, the 38811 number appears ... all other format options show the 38811!
I'm completely stumped ... can anyone out here offer a solution/suggestion?
