Date formatting

John Lincoln

I have setting language to UK English - but it doesn't help.
All I want is the date as I see it 13/5/2005 - that is the 13th day of
the 5th month (May).

The should be some way to do it - but it's not in the menu

I simply want the programme to write the way I write - not to
Americanise everything.

Eòin,

Your problem is obscure to me, because you do not mention the version of
Word, but more importantly do not give any context -- e.g., what steps you
are actually taking, and what you are getting. I infer that perhaps you are
getting a US date format -- 5/13/05 -- rather than 13/5/05, but the rest is
unknown.

In the absence of clear information, I can suggest you look at some notes on
the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to Your Will", which are
available as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Bend/BendWord.htm). In Appendix D: "Making
a toolbar with buttons for a variety of date formats" you'll see
blow-by-blow instructions on automating dates in the format you choose. The
examples are in the "13/5/05" sequence, because my Australian usage is the
same as UK usage. The advantage of going down this route is that once you
create this personalized solution, it's there forever -- whether you access
it via menu, toolbar button or keyboard shortcut.

* A SUGGESTION ‹ WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is proposed; sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a
better answer can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of
posting are at http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari
and it gives you a blank page the first time, you may need to hit the
circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current page" -- a few times).

* AND ONE MORE ‹ AVOID SPAM: To avoid spam directed at contributors of
newsgroups, you can set up a "send-only" dummy e-mail account. Full
instructions are at http://www.entourage.mvps.org/tips/tip019.html

Many thanks Clive - for the record I'm using Office 2004 / OS 10.3.9 /
Powerbook G4

The pull down menu - WORD / INSERT / DATE TIME - doesn't give the
preferred option for my date - so it looks as if I have to use your
customised toolbar from "Bend Word to Your Will".

Whilst on the subject - I wanted dates in the form 31/1/2005 as it
corresponds to British usage - ideally I would like to change the
format to 31 MONTH 2005 - BUT NOT IN ENGLISH! The months list in
Scottish Gaelic runs like this Faoilteach / Gearran / Màrt / etc. Is
there a way of inputting this into WORD 2004?

Perhaps that's just a step too far!

Yours - Eòin
