Date in Template

I have a template made up with my address letterhead. Is there a way to
include something so that it will open up with "today's date", but when
saved as a document, the date becomes fixed (that is does not change every
time I re-open the saved document)? How?

I would like the date placed "right-aligned" followed by the cursor on the
next line or two, left aligned ready for typing a letter.

Put the CreateDate into your template. When you open a new document from the
template, it will insert the current date (the date that the document is
being created) and this will not update. For a great introduction to

Thank you. A minor question: when I open the new template, the cursor is at
the top left (even though the template contains 2 blank lines left aligned
following the right aligned date. Is there a way for the cursor to appear
at the end instead of the beginning?

Set a bookmark where you want the insertion point to be when you open the
document. Then record a macro of going to that bookmark (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/UsingRecorder.htm) and name it AutoNew.
Make sure you save it in your document template (not Normal.dot). Whenever
you create a new document based on that template, the insertion point will
be at the bookmark position.

One important point on this thread, Jeff: You shouldn't be "opening" this
template directly; that's not how you use a template, and in this case, it'll
also have the effect of making the date ALWAYS be the date you created the
template. To create a document BASED ON the template, you either double-click
the template from Windows Explorer or select it in the File-> New dialog.
