date modified changes when the file is only opened

Hi Woody:

I need you to be a bit more specific than that. It's not doing it here, but
there are several dates involved, stored in different parts of the file.
Some of them will update when a file is open.

However, if you are referring to the Date Modified shown in the Finder's
details view, on this system that does not update when I simply Open, then
Close a file in Word. It will, of course, update if I open a file, then
close it and that file has any dynamic fields in it such as page numbers or
automatic numbering. They would update on Open and trigger a Save on Close.

Regards

This is in the finder running Word X on OS 10.3.

thanks for any help,

woody

John,

Thank you very much! I was indeed referring to the Date Modified shown
in the Finder. I am using page numbers and I also use EndNote for
references, which might be a dynamic field. Is there anyway to stop
"update on Open and trigger a Save on Close" for these files with
dynamic fields. I would really like to be able to look at these files
without triggering such a change.

thanks again,

Woody

Prefs>General has an "update automatic links at Open checkbox" which might
help.

However, those things should be recorded as changes, and require you to save
the document, I think. Does Close without saving not work?
