date of release of next version?

I am happily using the trial version of OneNote 2003. My copy will expire
soon and I'd like to know whether OneNote 2004/5 will be released soon. I'd
rather buy the retail version than an activation code for my trial version,
and I'd rather not buy the retail 2003 and see 2005 sitting on store shelves
one week later. I really use this product heavily

Microsoft has not announced any further versions at this point. Remember,
Service Pack 1 for OneNote just came out a little while ago.

I'd like to know whether OneNote 2004/5 will be
released soon.

This same question appears repeatedly in Microsoft, Macromedia, Adobe and
other software forums :)

Every potential buyer would love a release schedule for the next upgrade so
they can time their purchase perfectly.

No manufacturer likes to publish these schedules for the same reason - it
could adversely affect sales. However, there are often grace - or "fair
play" - periods whereby, if you purchased the product between certain dates
determined by the manufacturer, you can get a free upgrade.

So, caveat emptor, if you like the product as it stands and it does the job
you need it to (or close enough) then perhaps purchasing it now is a good
option for you. At least you'll get good use of it in the next few months
even if an upgrade is released in the New Year (hypothetically-speaking).

Besides, you may find that the next release does not really offer anything
extra that's compelling for you so you may not even choose to upgrade from
the current version.

Best wishes with your purchasing decision.

If it follows the Office schedule, July 2006 is early speculation:

Given that ON is a v.1.0 product and a standalone app (not sold with the
Office suite despite its name), I'd hope to see v.2.0 some time in 2005 :)

OneNote *is* a standalone application, but it is still part of the Office
family of products, which have had coordinated release schedules in the
past.

but it is still part of the
Office family of products,

I wish it was part of the Suite (Word, Excel etc) instead of requiring extra
$$.

which have had coordinated release
schedules in the past.

I'd like to think that we wouldn't have to wait 15-18 months for the next
revision of OneNote but I guess you're right in that it'll probably come out
with Office 12.
