Date Pickers, Formulas, Formats not working for me

I'm trying to operate a form on a sharepoint site whose purpose is to track
discussions with clients. One of the form's fields is the date of the
discussion (after several tries failed to submit, proving nobody would ever
'guess' the correct date format, I made the field a date picker, with a start
value formula 'today') and further down there is a repeating group of action
items, with a deadline field constructed the same as above (picker & default
value today, identical format selected - 'Weekday, Month & Day, Year').

Upon clicking 'new' in the home sharepoint document library,
The discussion date field fills correctly, but no date picker is available.
Nothing appears in the deadline field at all, no picker is available, and
even a cut-paste from the discussion date field throws a validation error.
The right-click detail for the refused field says 'Only data allowed
(example: 2001-03-12)'.
The mind boggles. Any clever ideas?

Hello,

Date data type fields allows the date format should be equal to
‘YYYY-MM-DD’. You have to check in you xml node value once before doing any
operation in your form.
