Date X-Axis in Excel Chart

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have a chart that plots data for 72 months. In my spreadsheet the monthly dates are entered as "01/01/2002" and are formated as "Jan-02". When i try to change the any of the boxes in the Format Axis, Scale dialogue I get the message:

"The entry is invalid for the data used by this chart. Please enter a value that falls within the minimum and maximum data values used by this chart"

I dont get this using the same spreadsheet in the PC version of Excel 2008.

Is this a bug?

I have the same Problem. Diagrams with a date type in the X-axis from Mac Excel 2004 are altered in Mac Excel 2008 and can not be reedit as you describe it. Also new diagrams in Mac Excel 2008 can not be modified after generation. I think it is definitely a bug. But unfortunately there is no way to get in contact with Microsoft.
