Dates & Numbers w/ Text

How do I combine text with date (or amount) and still
maintain it's format?

For example, let's say I have a cell with $1.00. Another
cell saying "You owe ". When I combine them, it gives
me "You owe 1". What I really want is "You owe $1.00".

Is that possible? If so, how?
