Heather,

it sounds like there is a field code inserted in your
document. If it's in a header or footer, you must delete
it there. If it lives in the body of the document, delete
it there. Field codes can be deleted as any other text.

You can toggle field codes ON or OFF by pressing Alt F9.
This enables you to view the actual code contained in each
one.
