Dates pre 1900

I am using excel (Office 2000) for some of my genealogical tables. This
includes dates pre 1900. I would like to sort my tables on these dates.

Can excel cope with older dates?

I would love to filter and sort on my 17th & 18th century dates without it
trying to treat it as a text field.
